"CUTE CRITTER SAYS NO TO EARLY SPRING"

His appearance is crucial to the longevity of winter every February 2 but this time he disappointed many. A crowd of 200 people waited with baited breath early this morning in Wiarton, Ont., to witness the prediction. Most groaned and some cheered.

Yes, our furry albino forecaster, 'Wiarton Willie' saw his shadow which means six more weeks of cold and snow! The rest of the country fared no better with 'Shubenacadie Sam' (Nova Scotia) and 'Balzac Billy' (Calgary) all in agreement that this season is far from over. Same goes south of the border with Pennsylvannia's 'Punxsutawney Phil' who broke the bad news of winter's extension to thousands of people gathered to witness his prediction at Gobbler's Knob.

German folklore has it that animals contained 'supernatural powers' that were only active on this special day which marks the half way point between winter and spring. It's supposed to have helped farmers determine when to plant to ensure a successful crop. Oh well, better luck next year!
