Answer: Kennedy, Clinton and Obama. Cue the Jeopardy theme. Question: What U.S. President's have Canadians expressed such enthusiasm for? That was exactly the case on a cold and snowy day in February on Parliament Hill when the newly appointed 'U.S. President Barack Obama' surrounded by Secret Service agents pulled up in the infamous 'Beast'.
Crowds eagerly and patiently awaited, proudly waving signs of their approval for just a glimpse of the man whom the whole world has been set a buzz about. Finally, he exits the car and casually waves to the people behind the barrier. It's truly a priceless moment that will go down in history for those that witnessed it first hand.
I was quite impressed with him at the press conference. It was then that I actually gained further respect for the man. He thanked Canadians not only for their contribution on fighting the war against terror, not only the ones that helped with his campaign, but everyone in our country. This spoke volumes of the class act he truly is. The fact that he chose to make his first official visit to Canada says a lot of what he thinks about his neighbours to the north considering Bush decided that Mexico was the way to go when he was elected. That obviously didn't sit at all well with Canadians and rightfully so considering we are only the US's largest trading partner in the world.
Truthfully, I didn't expect great things from Bush and I haven't figured out why he was ever reelected for yet another term. The only thing that comes to mind is that people chose the devil they did know rather than the devil they didn't. Have you seen John Kerry? Sheesh scary! I'm curious to see what this guy will bring to the White House and you know that the whole world will be keeping a close eye on him.
His meeting with Harper (although brief since he was back at home in time for dinner) proved successful. I just wish good ol' Harper would take a page from Obama's book of wisdom and proves once and for all he's (and the Conservatives are) not the initial train wreck his (their) own country believes he is (they are). That too is something this country is anxiously waiting to see although I'm not holding my breath.
Lastly, Obama did make time to go to into town to pick up a snow globe and a key chain for his girls (apparently they've been collecting them throughout his campaign). He also popped into a local coffee shop (heavily surrounded by muscle of course) and all the locals said he was very pleasant which I'm sure added to his larger than life persona that the world's built. So even with all this hype, he's as down to earth man as ever only with some pretty big shoes to fill. Hey, it's all in a days work.
You come back to Canada you hear Obama? But when it's warmer...Brrrrrrr....
